Manna

MANNA is located at an altitude of 1200m. on Mount Mainalos and is a historic preserved building of unique architecture, which has been declared a protected monument. It dates back to 1929 and is known as "The Sanatorium of Mana". The building was named after Anna Mela, sister of the Macedonian hero Pavlos Melas, who was also the creator of the sanatorium. She wished to create the largest sanatorium in the Balkans, for this reason, she got financial help from the affluent Greeks of the diaspora, in Egypt and America. Anna Mela was an aristocrat of the time, who dedicated her life and fortune to the treatment of wounded soldiers and patients with tuberculosis. Due to her absolute devotion to the patients, and her extensive charity, she was characterized as the "Soldier's Mother". The sanatorium got its name from her!

MANNA functioned as a sanatorium until 1938. The abundant fresh air due to the altitude and the dense forest, became an ideal factor for the treatment of the patients of that time. With the introduction of penicillin as a treatment against tuberculosis, the sanatorium was closed, ransacked, and was then abandoned. MANNA is an iconic building of neoclassical influences, with cornices and gables. Built by legendary local craftsmen from the nearby village of Lagadia, known for their stone craftsmanship, and designed by the architect Xenophon Angelidis, it was constructed with reinforced concrete slabs, gray limestone stone and wood and mosaic floors, which are preserved to this day. After the sanatorium was closed and ransacked, its precious stone windowsills were dispersed to newer structures, while its wooden roof was removed and re-applied in its entirety to a hospital in Tripoli!
